a real journalist analyzes rompers

Thanks to my journalist sister for bringing this article from Slate's fabulous Double X Factor to my attention:

The Romper Craze: Why Grown Women Dress Like Toddlers

For all of you onesie haters out there who have been wondering why I post so often about this summer obsession... Jessica Grose delves into the onesie trend to try to figure out what the hype is all about.

more on the playsuit/onesie/romper trend

Silence & Noise Ruffle Front Onesie in Champagne $68.00

I just can't get enough of the onesie/romper trend this summer...I have seen it called a "playsuit" on a lot of websites so I think I will start using that nomenclature. It sounds very cute! I remember way back in January I was searching at every store in Soho for one of these adorable onepieces and could barely find any, but now I am happy to report that they are popping up in display windows everywhere!

For all of you who hated this trend when it first came out, what are you thinking now?

Here are some great picks of affordable options from Urban Outfitters in strapless and fun floral patterns:

Ecote Floral Printed Halter Onesie $58.00

Rapscallion by Samantha Pleet Denim Romper $78.00

Ecote Strapless Smocked Onesie in Woodsmoke Floral $58.00

onesie

I know there's still snow on the ground, but I'm already looking forward to spring 2009 because of the amazing comeback of rompers! I support a new addition to the one-piece concept (I have been stuck on dresses for too many seasons) that allows you to focus on just picking shoes and jewelry to match. Many stores are still unloading fall/winter items, so I will continue searching for the perfect romper for the next few months...my search so far has resulted in far less options than I had hoped for. There are many different styles, but I prefer the casual version with shorts and a halter, deep V or a short-sleeved button-up on top. The designer pieces are gorgeous, but I don't see this trend staying around for too long so I'm not willing to splurge.

Here are my picks...

most casual...American Apparel Tri-Blend Halter Romper $28.00

denim-inspired...Guess Pacific Romper $89.00

bikini cover-up...Silence & Noise Odyssey One-Piece $68.00

super splurge...Alice + Olivia Halter Shorts One Piece Romper $297.00
